A "SPIRIT FIRST" DISCUSSION OF THE WORLD OF PLANT MEDICINES
In this talk, Dr. Joe Tafur will review the spread of Spirit Plant Medicine from indigenous cultures into Western society, drawing primarily from his experience working at a traditional healing center in the Peruvian Amazon. Plant Spirit Medicine is in many ways distinct from the psychedelic umbrella under which it is sometimes placed. Plant Spirit Medicine draws directly from connection to and celebration of spirit, all that we understand and all that we do not. More and more, indigenous traditions are informing the work of psychedelic researchers and underground practitioners. SPEAKER BIO:
Dr. Joe Tafur, M.D., is a Colombian-American family physician originally from Phoenix, Arizona. After completing his family medicine training at UCLA, Dr. Tafur spent two years in academic research at the UCSD Department of Psychiatry in a lab focused on mind-body medicine. Afterhis research fellowship, over a period of six years, he lived and worked in the Peruvian Amazon at the traditional healing center Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual. There he worked closely with master Shipibo shaman Ricardo Amaringo and trained in ayahuasca shamanism. In his book "The Fellowship of the River: A Medical Doctor's Exploration intoTraditional Amazonian Plant Medicine," through a series of stories,Dr. Tafur shares his unique experience and integrative medical theories. He is now helping to organize the Modern Spirit Epigenetics Project, a cutting edge investigation into the epigenetic effects of MDMA-assisted Psychotherapy.
